Hydra Slayer

Hydra Slayer

You are facing a nine-headed hydra. Your flaming longsword cuts five heads in each swipe (no more, no less), which will kill a five-headed hydra, but a larger one will regrow two heads after each swipe. Your storm scythe cuts exactly seven heads, but it makes ten heads grow back if the hydra is not dead. Is it possible to kill the hydra? What if you also had a silver dagger, which cuts just one head, but makes five heads grow back?

Solution: It is impossible without the silver dagger (the number of heads always stays divisible by 3), but possible with the silver dagger, for example: 9 -> longsword -> 6 -> longsword -> 3 -> dagger -> 7 -> scythe -> 0.

If you liked this puzzle, and you also like dungeon crawling, Hydra Slayer is for you!

Hydra Slayer is a roguelike (randomly generated dungeon crawler), with unique combat mechanics based on the puzzle above. It is challenging both at a short term tactical level (each hydra is a unique challenge, bumping into it with your weapon almost never works), and at a long term strategy level (you have to build a set of weapons which slays hydras effectively). While the early levels could be used to teach arithmetics and tactical planning in a fun way, building an effective set of weapons for late levels is a challenge even for expert number theorists!

Hydra Slayer currently features a tutorial, 5 player character races with distinct characteristics, 28 enemy types (10 common hydras, each in two varieties, and 8 special enemies), 28 types of equipment including rare artifact weapons with special properties (not counting material and size variations), 15 weapon materials, 18 types of magical items which help you in your quests, three game geometries to choose from, 8 level topologies on very deep levels (including the Möbius strip and Klein bottle), 11 level generators, and two endings (a small victory for quick challenges and more casual players, and a big victory for those who want more challenge).

Hydra Slayer is available for free from its website. By buying the Steam version, you get typical Steam features, and more frequent updates — currently, the Steam version has the following bonus features:

  • online achievements and leaderboards
  • Steam trading cards
  • cloud-based saves
  • daily challenge
  • automatic updates
  • a "challenge" mode for short but very interesting games (much more unpredictable than the normal play)
  • updated interface and performance (watch those heads fly!)
  • new music
  • traps to lead hydras on
  • Orbs which provide a powder/potion effect many times at the cost of a weapon slot
  • source code (except the Steam features)

Requirements:

  • OS: Windows XP
  • Processor: 0.5 GHz
  • Memory: 512 MB RAM
  • Storage: 200 MB available space
  • OS: OSX 10.7 64-bit

Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon – Golgotha

Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon - Golgotha

About This Content
The Ork forces were ultimately defeated in the 2nd War for Armageddon, but amongst the billions of dead Orks one body was not to be found, that of Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka.

Few in the Imperium heeded the warnings of Commissar Yarrick that he must be hunted down, foolishly believing that Thraka was just another Xeno who would surely be relegated to history. For Thraka though, the whole invasion of Armageddon was merely a way to test the waters – an experiment to learn how the Imperium would react against a massive invasion.

In Stardock’s newest fantasy strategy game, your existence is threatened by the evil Sorcerer King who is hell-bent on ascending to Godhood. The problem is, Godhood comes with the price of your entire world’s destruction, which is a bit of a bummer. The clock is ticking down to Doomsday and you must raise your army as you explore the land and take on hundreds of quests in your efforts to stop the Sorcerer King before it’s too late. Expand your kingdom, learn powerful new spells, and choose your allies and enemies carefully. You will need every bit of help you can get when you finally bring the fight to the Sorcerer King’s doorstep. After all…how do you kill a God?Key Features:

MASSIVE CHALICE

MASSIVE CHALICE

MASSIVE CHALICE is a tactical strategy game set on an epic timeline from Double Fine Productions. As the Immortal Ruler of the Nation, you’ll take command of its heroes, forge marriages to strengthen your Bloodlines, and battle a mysterious enemy known as the Cadence in a war lasting hundreds of years.Key Features

  • Bloodline Genetics – MASSIVE CHALICE features an innovative Bloodline system that allows the player to marry heroes together to produce children. The Bloodline system uses a randomized genetic code for every hero. Their children can end up with the best (or worst!) gameplay-impacting traits of their parents.
  • Permadeath – The heroes in MASSIVE CHALICE age over the course of the timeline and eventually pass away. This forces the player to engage in the beauty of permadeath and always juggle an imperfect party of heroes with which to do battle!
  • Bloodline Relics – If a hero has fought valiantly enough when they inevitably pass away, their weapon has a chance to become a Bloodline Relic. This powerful Relic can be passed down to any character of the same house in order to carry on the legacy of the fallen hero!
  • Long View Strategy – Because the war lasts 300 years, players need to take a long view of their strategy. Decisions have to be made dozens of years in advance and long-term planning is incredibly important. That 3-year-old toddler is going to grow up to be your most reliable melee fighter sooner than you think!
